Well-Deserved Rest

Mary Elizabeth was sleeping when I arrived this evening after work, and slept right through my visit.  I learned from the nurses that she was “in the chair” for four hours this afternoon, and likely had visits from the physios and the occupods.  That, combined with the fact that she had a fenestrated tracheostomy tube in all day, which requires extra effort to breathe, adds up to a very tired Mary Elizabeth.

Tomorrow morning we’ll be meeting with all the therapists and doctors on Mary Elizabeth’s case to discuss the treatment plan and I’m hoping that we’ll get some idea of when she might be able to travel home and what some of the logistics might be.  We’re obviously hoping that it will be within the next few weeks, but we’ll see.

As we’re getting closer to leaving, I’m realizing that I will miss a lot about my time here.  Mary Elizabeth’s illness notwithstanding, I’ve built up a lot of positive memories and experiences over the last 11 weeks here – from the unique gritty charm of the East End of London to the circle of friends both new and old that I’ve made.  This experience has been extraordinary for both good reasons and not-so-good reasons, and it will leave a lasting impression on me that I will take with me when we leave and carry in my heart for a long, long time.

I will post at mid-day tomorrow to let you know how our meeting goes.  Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

  1. Dear Scott, I heard a hawk crying out today and thought of you. Although Mary Elizabeth was tired out (wow just reading about what she went through today makes me feel tired!), it is still some progress. Take good care of yourself, and know we all think of you with love, Noelle

  2. Dear Scott
We will be praying for you and Mary Elizabeth tomorrow. I hope that you have a clearer vision of when you will be able to bring Mary Elizabeth home to her children, mother, friends & family after your meeting. God is watching over you and will bring you the strength you need to handle this journey that you are on.
    God Bless You,
    Bob & Carol

  3. Dear Scott,
I am smiling as I sit here and catch up on Mary Elizabeth’s week of progress. What a tremendous week you have both had….”love in the afternoon”…you deserve it! No wonder you are both exhausted! Get some rest. You need it as much as Mary Elizabeth.
    Thinking of you always.
    Adrienne

  7. Fingers crossed for you both! Hoping you will be able to start putting together a transition plan soon. Again, I have some resources that may be able to help with the logistics.

    Best, Abbey

  9. Scott-
I am confident that you’ll hear only good news tomorrow, and that Mary Elizabeth’s home-coming day will be timely. Keep hanging in there and sooner than you know it, you’ll all be together under 1 roof.
